How to use the trial chamber finder

  1. Type your seed (run /seed in Java) and choose Java or Bedrock.
  2. Enter your X and Z position, or press the crosshair button to use the map centre.
  3. Read the list: each trial chamber has its X and Z, its distance in blocks and a compass arrow.
  4. Select a trial chamber 1,000 blocks or more from you and its card also gives the Nether X and Z, for a shorter trip through a Nether portal.
  5. Travel to the X and Z shown, then dig down to between Y −40 and Y −20.

What Y level are trial chambers at?

Trial chambers generate underground between Y −40 and Y −20, below the deepslate line, so the finder gives you X and Z and you dig straight down from there. Their walls are tuff bricks and copper, which are easy to recognise when you break into one, and they can cut through caves and mineshafts.

What is inside a trial chamber?

A trial chamber is a maze of corridors and combat rooms. Trial spawners release waves of mobs — including the breeze — and each one you beat drops trial keys. Keys open vaults, which hold loot such as diamonds, emeralds, enchanted books and wind charges.

Ominous trials, started while you have Bad Omen, use ominous trial keys and ominous vaults, which can give a heavy core — the base of the mace.

Trial chamber maps and the locate command

Cartographer villagers sell a trial explorer map, but it points to only one chamber. With cheats on, the locate command works as a trial chamber locator. The finder lists every nearby chamber without cheats.

When were trial chambers added?

Trial chambers arrived in the Tricky Trials update, version 1.21, released on for both Java and Bedrock. Worlds made in 1.20.1 or earlier do not have them in areas that were already generated; new chunks you explore in 1.21 or later can contain them.

Frequently asked questions

Are trial chambers in the same place in Java and Bedrock?

No. The two editions place structures with different rules, so one seed puts trial chambers in different spots. Choose your edition at the top of the map.

How deep do I need to dig?

Dig down to between Y −40 and Y −20 at the X and Z shown. Press F3 in Java, or turn on Show Coordinates in Bedrock, to see your current Y level.
