How to find your Minecraft world seed

Your seed is the number Minecraft used to build your world. In Java Edition, type /seed in chat. In Bedrock Edition, open the world’s settings and read the Seed field.

Where to find the seed

Where you playHow to see the seed
Java single-playerRun /seed; it works even with cheats off.
Java serverAn operator runs /seed, or reads level-seed in server.properties.
Bedrock (any device)Edit the world (or open Settings while playing), then find Seed in the game settings.
Any world you can open as a fileOpen the world file on the seed map; it reads the seed on your device.

Java Edition (Windows, macOS and Linux)

  1. Open your world.
  2. Open chat (press T by default).
  3. Type /seed and press Enter.
  4. The seed appears in chat. Click the number to copy it.

In single-player, /seed works even when cheats are off. On a multiplayer server it needs operator permission, so ask an operator if the command is refused.

On a Java server

An operator can run /seed in game or in the server console. The server owner can also look at the level-seed line in server.properties, but that line is empty when the world got a random seed, and changing it later does not change an existing world. The number /seed prints is the one the world really uses.

From the world folder

Java worlds are saved in the saves folder of your Minecraft folder, one folder per world. On the seed map, choose Open your world file… and pick level.dat from your world’s folder. Minecraft 26.x keeps the seed in data/minecraft/world_gen_settings.dat instead, so pick that file together with level.dat, or a .zip of the whole world folder. The file is read on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Bedrock Edition (PC, console and mobile)

Bedrock Edition runs on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The seed is in the world’s settings, not in a command.

  1. In your list of worlds, choose to edit the world. If you are already playing, open the pause menu and choose Settings instead.
  2. In the game settings, find the Seed field.
  3. Write the number down, or copy it if your device lets you select the text.

On a Bedrock server or Realm

If you do not own the world, the settings may not show its seed. Ask the owner or a server operator for it.

From a world file

If your device lets you export the world as a .mcworld file, or reach the world’s folder with its level.dat, open that file with Open your world file… on the seed map. It finds the seed without opening the game.

Use your seed on the map

  1. Paste or type the seed into the Seed field on the Minecraft seed map. In Java, if the world was made from a text seed, you can type the same text.
  2. Choose the same edition as your world, Java or Bedrock: one seed places structures differently in each.
  3. Pick your game version, then enter your X and Z to list the nearest structures.

To look for one structure, open the village finder or the trial chamber finder. To link two portals, use the Nether portal calculator.

Questions

Can I see the seed without cheats?

Yes. In Java single-player, /seed works with cheats off. In Bedrock, the Seed field in the world’s settings does not need cheats. Opening the world file on the map works in both editions.

Can I get a server’s seed if I am not an operator?

Not with /seed: on a server it needs operator permission. Ask an operator or the server owner.

My seed is text, not a number. Does that work?

In Java, yes. Java Edition turns a text seed into a number, and the map does the same, so the text and that number give the same map. /seed shows the number. In Bedrock, type the seed from the Seed field in the world’s settings.

The map does not match my world. What now?

Check that the edition and the game version match your world. Some structure types are only approximate on some versions; see how accurate each structure is. If a structure is still in the wrong place, report it with the seed, edition, version and coordinates.
